The 1977 British Grand Prix was a race of firsts, as Renault turned up with their radical new 1.5-litre turbocharged RS01, and McLaren fielded a third car for Canadian rookie Gilles Villeneuve to make his debut in. He impressively qualifeid within eight-tenths of a second of reigning world champion James Hunt, who claimed pole position for his home race.
