Ryan Hunter-Reay earned his first win in IndyCar, ending Rahal-Letterman Racing 4 years wait for a return to the top step of the podium. Championship leader Scott Dixon made headlines for the wrong reasons after collecting Ryan Briscoe while trying to get heat into his tyres under caution, with both drivers retiring on the spot and allowing Hunter-Reay to attack then-leader Darren Manning. The Briton, short on fuel, could not resist the pressure and Hunter-Reay easily overtook him with 9 laps to go, exploiting the best of his fresher tyres. Manning held on second place, ahead of Tony Kanaan.

Justin Wilson dominated most of the event, en route to victory, the first-ever Indy car win for Dale Coyne Racing. Late in the race, Wilson was carrying the optional red tires. A late-race caution bunched the field for a sprint to the finish. Wilson got the jump on the restart, and pulled out to over a 4-second lead to preserve the win. It was the first race all season, and the first since the 2008 Detroit event, which saw neither Ganassi nor Penske in victory lane.
