Just one corner separated Helio Castroneves from his first win of the season, but it wasn’t to be. He ran out of fuel with the checkered flag in sight. Scott Dixon, who was in the middle of a major scrap for the lead in the dying stages with Marco Andretti and Vitor Meira, flew past the crawling Castroneves to take his sixt win of the season.

IndyCar: 2009 Kentucky Indy 300 video

Several new rules were introduced at the 2009 Kentucky Indy 300 to improve competiton, among them drivers now had a new toy to play with: push-to-pass. It proved a popular decision as fans enjoyed a brilliant race which went down to the wire. With 50 laps to go, 5 drivers were battling for the lead. With 10 laps to go, Ed Carpenter and Ryan Briscoe raced side by side, swapping the lead several times each lap. On the final turn, Briscoe edged ahead, and denied Carpenter his first career victory by 0.0162 seconds.
