He shared the front row with Andre Ribeiro who also had Mercedes power in his Penske. Third place for Jimmy Vasser (Reynard-Honda) and fourth for Christian Fittipaldi (Swift-Ford) meant three different chassis and car manufacurers were represented in the top four on the grid.

Scott Dixon started the 2008 season with a win from pole position after Tony Kanaan hit trouble when a lapped Ernesto Viso spun in front of him and damaged his suspension. Kanaan tried to hold on to the lead under caution in case the race finished behind the Safety Car but was forced to make way to the field once the green flag was waved 4 laps before the end. Marco Andretti followed Dixon home with Dan Wheldon recovered from a low starting position to finish third.

The championship battle came down to a three-man race between Scott Dixon, Dario Franchitti (5 points behind), and Ryan Briscoe (8 points behind). In what became the series’ first oval race to run caution-free the full distance, the three title contenders dominated and were the only cars to finish on the lead lap. In the final 50 laps, fuel strategy became key, as Dixon and Briscoe ran 1st-2nd, with Franchitti trailing some 25 seconds in third. Both Dixon and Briscoe were forced to pit for fuel in the final 8 laps, while Franchitti stayed out and stretched his fuel to the finish. Franchitti’s race victory clinched his second IndyCar Series title.
