Following their crushing defeat in the final minutes of the 2016 race, and the departure of LMP1 rivals Audi, Toyota were heavy pre-race favourites to finally score their first victory in the French endurance classic. But in hot conditions they and Porsche struggled with reliability, and a few hours before the finish it seemed an extraordinary shock result was on the cards.
