Round 6 of the 1987 IndyCar (CART) season
The Meadowlands circuit in New Jersey hosted the CART championship for the fourth time in 1987. Mario Andretti took his fourth pole of the year for Newman-Haas but was still looking to repeat his season-opening victory from Long Beach. He shared the front row of the grid with Bobby Rahal, who had won the previous round in Portland. A grid of 26 cars contested the race on the short, 2.7-kilometre circuit.
